Setting scopes#

Settings combines personal preferences with controls the owner can manage for other users. Personal-only rows have no shared-default or permission cells. A theme selection, for example, belongs to the profile; it is not a server-wide theme policy.

In the owner's Your users area, the value is the shared default and the permission controls whether viewers may choose another value. Editing those cells changes a publication draft. It does not immediately distribute the change to other devices.

Which value applies?#

StateEffective behavior
Future feature not adoptedThe feature is unavailable. Value and permission do not independently enable it.
Managed setting is LockedThe owner's value applies. The viewer cannot change it.
Can change, with a personal choiceThe saved personal value takes precedence over the server default.
Can change, following the serverThe published server default applies. Without a published value, Reel uses its factory default.
Personal-only settingThe profile's local choice applies within that setting's scope.

A viewer sees Follow server setting before the concrete values of an editable managed control. Selecting Follow clears that field's personal override. Selecting a concrete value explicitly saves an override, even if it currently equals the server default.

Example: changing a shared default#

Suppose the server default for Home preset is Compact and the permission is Can change. One viewer selects Expanded; another leaves Follow server setting selected.

If you publish Logo as the new default, the first viewer retains Expanded. The second receives Logo after refresh. If you also lock the setting, both receive Logo. The first viewer's saved Expanded choice becomes inactive rather than being erased; unlocking allows it to apply again.

Animation placeholderDefault, override, lock

Show the same setting as a server default, a personal override, and an enforced value.

A lock suppresses an existing personal override. Feature withdrawal has different consequences.

Bulk permissions#

Bulk user access changes permissions across the managed settings. Locked removes the ability for viewers to edit those settings. Can change permits their own values. Personal-only controls are unaffected, and changing a permission does not replace the default values you selected.

Review the draft and publish after changing permissions. A successful save of a personal preference is not a publication of shared policy.

Scope limits#

Personal configuration choices are scoped to the profile and server on that TV. A preference on one Roku is not a promise of a corresponding override on another Roku. Shared defaults provide the common starting point across devices.

Disabling a parent display option can make its child controls inactive without deleting their values. Withdrawing a future feature is more substantial: see withdrawal behavior before using availability as a substitute for a permission lock.
