Background targets#

Page backgrounds controls the images used behind library and collection browsing surfaces. Targets include collection landing pages, collection details, combined library grids, and individual-library grids. Home presentation uses its own controls.

The picker separates the target from the image choice. Select a target, browse available artwork, inspect its preview, and apply the choice to the draft. Color or greyscale and brightness adjustments control how the image appears behind content.

Inheritance and explicit choices#

ChoiceMeaning
DefaultNo explicit custom choice for that target. An individual library inherits the shared single-library choice.
OffExplicitly disable the custom background for the target.
Selected imageUse that image and its selected presentation options for the target.
Customise each libraryExpose individual-library choices. Turning this off retains those choices and uses the shared single-library background.

Artwork chosen for an individual collection takes precedence over the general collection-detail background. When diagnosing an unexpected image, identify the most specific applicable target before changing the shared default.

Animation placeholderShared background and library override

Show target selection, brightness preview, and one individual library inheriting or overriding the shared image.

Default and Off have different meanings. A saved override can remain inactive while per-library customization is disabled.

Applying and publishing#

Use this one applies a previewed selection to the draft. Shared changes still require publication. The background picker uses the same publication verification as other owner changes.

If Publish is unavailable, focus its control and read the explanation. A preview on the owner's Roku is not evidence that a viewer has received the background configuration.

Artwork boundaries#

Page backgrounds is a selection and presentation surface, not a filesystem browser or arbitrary image-upload service. The REEL Photos library setup in this documentation supplies studio and rating identities; it is not an instruction to place page backgrounds in the same directory and expect them to enter this picker.

Keep collection artwork and descriptions in Plex when they belong to a specific collection. That preserves the relationship between the collection and its media independently of Reel's general page presentation.
