Terms of use
Effective July 13, 2026
The plain-English version: Reel is a client for a media server you run yourself. The media on that server is yours, and so is the responsibility for it. If you buy Reel, the purchase is a one-time license handled by Roku - no subscription, no in-app purchases. The app is provided as-is, by one person, doing their best.
1. Agreement
By installing or using Reel you agree to these terms and to the privacy policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app. These terms are an agreement between you and the maker of Reel - not between you and Roku, Inc.
2. What Reel is - and is not
Reel is a Roku client application for a personal media server that you (or someone in your household) already run. Reel includes no content, hosts no content, and provides access to no content. It requires a compatible third-party media server to do anything at all; that server software is licensed to you separately, on its own terms, by its own maker. We have no access to your server or your library, and no ability to see, moderate, or control what is on it.
3. Your library, your responsibility
You are solely responsible for the media stored on and streamed from your server. By using Reel you represent that you have the legal right to store, play, and share within your household everything in the library you connect. Reel is for personal, lawful use; it may not be used to redistribute content or to infringe anyone's rights.
4. Purchase and refunds
Reel may be offered as a paid download through the Roku Channel Store. The purchase is a one-time license - no subscription, no recurring fees, no in-app purchases. Billing is handled entirely by Roku Pay under Roku's own terms; we never see your payment details and cannot process a refund ourselves. Refund requests go through Roku and follow the Roku Channel Store's refund policies.
5. License
Your purchase (or invited beta installation) grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Reel on Roku devices linked to your Roku account. You may not copy, modify, sell, sublicense, or redistribute the app, and you may not reverse engineer it except where the law says that restriction cannot apply.
6. Beta builds
Pre-release builds of Reel are provided for evaluation. They may change, break, or expire without notice, and features present in a beta are not a promise about the released product. Feedback you volunteer may be used to improve the app, with our thanks.
7. Independence
Reel is an independent product built by one person. It is not made by, affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Roku, Inc., nor by the maker of any media-server software it connects to. All trademarks belong to their respective owners.
8. Roku's role
Roku, Inc. distributes the app and processes payments, but owes you no warranty or support obligation for Reel - that is on us. Roku and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them, and your use of any Roku device or service remains governed by Roku's own agreements.
9. No warranty
Reel is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not promise the app will be uninterrupted or error-free. Playback depends on your server, your network, and services we do not control; how they behave is outside the app's promises.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of Reel, and our total liability for any claim is capped at the amount you paid for the app or fifty US dollars, whichever is greater. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; where that is so, these apply to the fullest extent permitted.
11. Indemnity
You agree to hold us harmless from claims arising out of the content of your library or your violation of these terms.
12. Termination
You may end this agreement at any time by removing Reel from your devices. The license ends automatically if you violate these terms. We may discontinue the app or its distribution; if that ever happens, any refund rights follow Roku's store policies.
13. Changes to these terms
If these terms change, this page changes first, and the date at the top will tell you when. Continued use of Reel after a change means you accept the revised terms.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Arizona, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Anything found unenforceable is severed; the rest stands.
